Copyrights may be registered with the United States Copyright office. While the creator of an artistic expression owns a copyright in their work even without registration, registering the work with the Copyright office can provide significant benefits. Many different types of works can be registered including, songs, lyrics, paintings, photographs, books, sculptures and videos. If works are registered within three months of publication, or before they are infringed, owners of the registered work may be able to recover monetary damages that would not be available in the absence of registration. If a work has already been infringed, copyright registration may be necessary to pursue a claim against the infringer.
